New Learner Permit Requirements Now In Effect
Important Note: As of August 1, 2025, individuals who are under 18 years old and have never held a driver license from any other state, country or jurisdiction must complete a 6-hour DETS course before applying for a license in Florida.

FLHSMV Scam Alert - phishing texts
FLHSMV is aware of a recent phishing text alert scam sent to customers regarding driver license status and pending suspensions. While the full extend of the scam is unknown at this time, the threat is serious. As a reminder, if you receive any suspicious messages, do not click any links, share personal or financial information and report to your local law enforcement agency immediately. FLHSMV will never contact customers via text message demanding payment or threatening suspension or arrest.

REAL ID compliant driver licenses and ID cards begin enforcement on May 7th, 2025.
“REAL ID is a nationwide effort to improve the integrity and security of State-issued driver licenses and ID cards, which in turn will help fight terrorism and reduce identity fraud,” according to Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Florida began issuing REAL ID compliant credentials back in January of 2010.
