Education, Business and Community Leaders in Jacksonville to Gather for GradNation Community Summit

Jacksonville Summit One of 100 Nationwide to Examine Challenges and Solutions for Raising High School Graduation Rates and Preparing All Young People for Success

Mayor Alvin Brown announced today he will convene the Jacksonville GradNation Community Summit with America’s Promise Alliance, the nation’s largest partnership dedicated to improving the lives of children and youth.

The all-day summit will be held Friday, April 4 at the Jacksonville Public Library’s Main Branch. The agenda will focus on how to improve high school graduation rates and better prepare young people for college and the workforce.

Opportunities for Jobs, Leadership and Diversion Begin at MLK Jr. Breakfast

Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown today launched a youth initiative that will increase summer job opportunities, expand efforts to keep first-time, nonviolent juvenile offenders out of repeat trouble and develop youth leaders in the community.

“Improving opportunities for Jacksonville’s next generation is one of my top priorities,” said Mayor Brown. “Young people represent the hope of our community. Wise investments in our youth pay huge dividends for them and for Jacksonville.”

Philadelphia Union To Face New York Red Bulls At EverBank Field

Philadelphia Union announced today that the soccer club will face 2013 Supporters’ Shield Champion New York Red Bulls Wednesday, Feb. 12 at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, FL, as part of the 2014 pre-season trip. The game will kick off at 6 p.m. Tickets are available now at the Tom Bush Family of Dealerships Box Office at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena, and online at Ticketmaster.com.

Ferry Service Restored

Thank you for your continued patience.  The St. Johns River Ferry will resume regular service today, Thursday, January 16, beginning at 6:00 a.m.  (Please note that the orange FDOT electronic message signs may continue to report that the ferry is closed because it could be midday Thursday before they are updated.)

Ferry Service Temporarily Suspending

Service on the St. Johns River has been temporarily suspended in response to a possible problem detected today with vessel control mechanisms that were replaced during last month’s overhaul and inspection.  Although we have long awaited the ferry’s return to normal operations, the decision to temporary suspend service is made with the upmost regard for passenger safety.  We anticipate ferry service to be suspended through tomorrow, Wednesday, January 15.  We again apologize for any inconvenience, but safety always comes first.  Please look for  future alerts with updates on this situation.

Ferry Back in Service!

More good news!  The St. Johns River Ferry successfully completed all her sea trials today and will actually be back in service tomorrow (Saturday January 11) beginning at 7:00 AM.  The “official” opening ceremony and all day free passage will still occur on Sunday, January 12.

Welcome Back the Ferry!

Hooray!  The St. Johns River Ferry will “officially” resume operations on Sunday, January 12th.  To celebrate the ferry’s official return to service,  passage on the ferry all day Sunday (January 12th) will be FREE of charge,  there will be food trucks, music, and balloon art for the kids,  and you can enter a drawing for various prizes, dinners and free ferry tickets – including a one year annual pass for free rides on the ferry.

27th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast

Join Mayor Alvin Brown and the City of Jacksonville to commemorate the anniversary of the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a breakfast honoring his life and dream for social change on Friday, Jan. 17. CNN reporter and anchor Soledad O'Brien will be this year's keynote speaker. In addition, six local students will be recognized as Tomorrow's Leaders for their volunteerism, leadership and civic responsibility.

Mid-January Return to Service

Unfortunately, the required overhaul of the St. Johns River Ferry is taking longer than originally planned.  Although it was anticipated the ferry would return to service by the end of December, the projected date is now mid-January.  We apologize for any inconvenience resulting from this delay.
