The final 35 miles of the St. Johns River runs through Jacksonville, the largest city by area in the United States, with a population of over one million. Much of the economic base of Jacksonville depends on the river: Northeast Florida’s strong military presence operates on the river and 18,000,000 tons of goods are shipped in an out of Jacksonville annually.
Hemming Park Celebrates 152nd Birthday

Jacksonville's most historic public space recently turned 152. Originally a village green, it was the first and is the oldest park in the city. The area was established as a public square in 1857 by Isaiah Hart, founder of Jacksonville. For a century and a half it has served and continues to serve as a central gathering space for Jacksonville citizens. It has survived disasters, been the host to several Presidents, and is now the monthly site of Jacksonville's Downtown Art Walk.

For U.S. Tourism Destinations on the Rise!
Jacksonville is one of the greatest destinations in the U.S. for travelers, according to a new ranking issued this week by tourism planning website TripAdvisor. The travel website praised Jacksonville for its diversity of offerings for visitors. “The sprawling northeastern Florida city has nature and wildlife preserves, historic residential neighborhoods and lots of golf courses,” one news release said.

The Jacksonville Public Library is a large library system, consisting of a 300,000 square foot main library and twenty regional, community and neighborhood branch libraries. We also serve the needs of the community with Talking Books Library for disabled customers and an active adult literacy program.
The St. Johns River

The St. Johns River, which has been designated as an American Heritage River by the Environmental Protection Agency, is the longest river in the state of Florida and its most significant one for commercial and recreational use. Riverwalks are located on the north and south banks of the St. Johns River in Downtown Jacksonville. Open since 1985 the Riverwalks are a venue where tourists and local residents can view the beauty of the river and the skyline of the city.
