Honoring Herbert Dixon's 100th Birthday Celebration

September 15, 2019

Council Member Ju'Coby Pittman with Herbert Dixon and family to celebrate his 100th birthday.

Herbert L. Dixon
Herbert L. Dixon was born on Sept 16, 1919, the oldest of 3 children to Louise Daniels and Henry Dixon in Dade City, FL. He moved to Bartow, FL with his family at age eight where he has been a lifelong   resident.  He married Catherine Roberts in 1941 and Remarried to the Late Rosa L. Dixon in 1960. He is the father of 10 children.

His love for golf began at age 14 when he was a caddie at Bartow Golf Course.  He never received formal lessons, and he was paid fifty cents per day for his service, and at times received tips up to 25 cents.  Mr. Dixon’s professional golfing career began in 1951 at the age of 32, during that time he won 63 tournaments.

With the help of his sponsors, Dr. Bunch and Dr. Roberts, he was able to travel to numerous professional golfing tournaments throughout the nation.
Mr. Dixon’s good friend, professional golfer Richard Lewis, accompanied him on many of the tournaments and taught him a lot about golf.

Mr. Dixon’s professional golfing career ended in 1961; Mr. Dixon was inducted into the National Black Golf Hall of Fame in  1998, received the African American Golfers Hall of Fame Legacy Award in 2012, and was inducted into the West Palm Beach Association Hall of Fame in 2014.

Mr. Dixon attended Union Academy where he was the valedictorian.  Retiring   after 30 years as a long distance truck driver,  he worked as a security guard for a private security company that serviced Polk County Elementary Schools until 2011 during which he made an impact and earned respect from many students and staff.

At 99, Mr. Dixon exemplifies great health, he consistently plays golf, exercises, and maintains his property.  Mr. Dixon has also maintained his “safe driver” status; he has made many lasting friendships and memories at home and on the golf course.

The annual “Herbert Dixon Charity Golf Tournament” proceeds benefit the Bartow Deacons and Stewards Alliance, Inc. Scholarship Fund which is used to present scholarships the aspiring college students.

Mr. Dixon has remained true to his dedication to God. He actively attends Praise Temple Deliverance Church in Bartow, FL. where he is seen dancing in the aisles.  His favorite bible scripture is Psalm 23. Two of his favorite life quotes are “Life is a Fortune Teller” and “You want to be Right, but you don’t want to be Dead Right.”

Mr. Dixon proudly celebrated his 100th Birthday at the Lexington Hotel on Saturday, Sept 15th at 5 p.m. in DUUUUVAL.
