Council President-Designate Daniel Davis Cancels Installation Post-Party in Light of State Tax Cuts

June 18, 2007
Today City Council President-Designate Daniel Davis announced that he has decided to cancel plans to host a privately funded reception at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium immediately following this year's City Council Installation Ceremony. Plans for the ceremony itself remain unchanged. Private contributions collected to date will be used to offset costs associated with the ceremony.

'While we've traditionally held a privately funded reception immediately following the ceremony, it doesn't seem right to spend resources in this manner when our city and non-profit community are battling tough financial issues in light of the state tax cuts. While the reception was to be funded by private dollars, I recognize that these funds could conceivably be used to support a local non-profit organization during this time of uncertainty.'

Traditionally, the installation ceremony marks the official 'swearing in' of the new City Council President and Vice President. This year, Council President-Designate Davis and Vice President-Designate Ronnie Fussell will outline their priorities for the year and Council President Michael Corrigan will give his final remarks as outgoing president. This year's ceremony also commemorates the official installation of the 2007-2011 City Council, as well as several constitutional officers.

The ceremony will take place on June 28 at 6 p.m. at the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts. The event is free and open to the public.
