Les Misérables: The New 25th Anniversary Production

Come celebrate French Week 2012 with the hit Broadway musical, Les Misérables! Based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel, Les Misérables is an epic and uplifting story about the survival of the human spirit. Cameron Mackintosh’s New 25th Anniversary Production of Les Misérables premieres at the Times-Union Center from May 1st - 6th for eight performances only! This new production features glorious new staging and spectacular reimagined scenery inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo. The New 25th Anniversary Production of Les Misérables is part of the Broadway Series presented in Jacksonville by The Artist Series.

The event celebrates the 450th anniversary of Jean Ribault’s arrival at the St. Johns River with a reading from Ribault’s journal followed by the speaker, John de Bry with 16th century music of the era during the reception featuring the Navy Band.

The Jacksonville Maritime Heritage Center will honor the crews of the French Navy's Etoile and Belle Poule by holding a reception. The event will feature the Sails of Reformation Exhibit and a taste of Jacksonville's local wine, beer and delicacies.

To commemorate 450 years of French history in Florida, the Cummer Museum of art and Gardens will lead a tour of the French paintings in their art collection, the Tree Cup Cafe will sample some of the cheese from their menu and you will have the opportunity to learn some French words and phrases, test your knowledge and play a round of Pictionary with a French theme.

Ring for Ribault

To commemorate the 450th anniversary of Huguenot Captain Jean Ribault's arrival here on the First Coast, the City of Jacksonville is asking for area churches and vessels up and down the St. Johns River to ring their bells and sound their horns on May 1, 2012 at noon.

The Ribault Monument commemorates the landing of Jean Ribault near the mouth of the St. Johns River in 1562. Ribault erected a stone column bearing the coat of arms of King Charles IX to claim Florida for France.
