Equal Pay Day is observed in April to symbolize how far into the year a woman must work in order to earn the wages paid to a man in the previous year. Tuesday symbolizes the day into the next work week women must work to earn what men earned the previous week. Each year, the Mayor’s Commission on the Status of Women partners with the Women’s Center of Jacksonville, the American Association of University Women, and the Women’s Center at University of North Florida to host Jacksonville’s Equal Pay Day event. The issue of unequal pay for women is highlighted (less than 80 cents on the dollar compared to men) and three local women who were successful in careers traditionally dominated by men receive Spirit of Rosie Awards.
