Discrimination in Public Accommodations

What is a place of Public Accommodation?

A place of public accommodation is any establishment, service, place or building which offers, sells, or otherwise makes available to the public any goods, services, facilities, privileges or advantages.

Who may file:

An individual may file a complaint of discrimination if he/she has been denied the full and equal enjoyment of goods, services, or facilities offered to the general public based on his/her race, color, national origin, sex (including pregnancy), sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, age, disability, familial status, marital status, or ancestry.

Based on the facts obtained during the initial evaluation of the allegations, the JHRC may file a formal charge of discrimination against the organization identified. Please note a charge filed with the JHRC is not a lawsuit and the JHRC does not accept or investigate anonymous complaints.

JHRC’s Office Hours:   Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Please note that all visitors to JHRC's offices must go through security and check in at the visitor's desk on the first floor.

Time Limits for Filing a Public Accommodations Complaint:

A complaint must be filed within 180 days of the alleged discriminatory act(s).
