Downtown Digs: Plant the Pits

October 20, 2008

Saturday, October 11, 2008 Jacksonville, Fla. - Downtown Vision Inc. (DVI) partnered with the Jacksonville Economic Development Commission (JEDC); City of Jacksonville, Councilman Don Redman; Republic Parking; and the Florida Nursery, Growers, and Landscape Association to plant tree beds Downtown. The initiative was a volunteer effort to help beautify the area.

More than 100 downtown tree beds were cleaned, mulched and planted on key pedestrian streets including portions of Laura, Ocean, Adams, Forsyth, Julia, Hogan and Monroe streets.

A call to action for all Downtown friends, partners and neighbors was issued for volunteers to provide the manpower for this greening initiative and proved to be successful. More than 155 people came out for the event and volunteered more than 400 hours total- a great turnout. More than 800 plants and 375 bags of mulch were placed in 213 Downtown tree beds.

This initiative will further enhance the streetscape environment and pedestrian experience along key corridors of Downtown. It also signifies the continued revitalization of Downtown and is an example of the Downtown Action Plan in progress.
