In November 2013, the Jacksonville metro area was selected to join an exchange network created by the Global Cities Initiative, a joint project of Brookings and JPMorgan Chase.  As part of the Exchange, Jacksonville developed a regional export plan and later a foreign direct investment strategy. Together these plans, which may also grow to include logistics and advanced industries, will comprise a customized global engagement strategy to strengthen the region's global economic connections and competitiveness. 

In July 2017, the Metro JAX/Northeast Florida Global Cities Initiative was rebranded as "JAX Global Trade."
