JaxParks to Hold Registration for Summer Camps

The City of Jacksonville Recreation and Community Programming Division– JaxParks –summer camp program registration period will begin in May.

Online pre-registration is available beginning Monday, May 5 at noon for campers who attended camp in 2007 and wish to enroll in the same camp. Online open registration begins Monday, May 19 at noon and will remain open until all seats are filled. Free public online access is available at all Jacksonville Public Libraries. Computers for registration are available at the Department of Recreation and Community Services JaxParks office, 851 N. Market St., for those paying by check or cash beginning at noon on Monday, May 19.

Registration for some athletic camps and lifeguard camps begins May 1. See details below.

Camps are offered for three two-week sessions. Session dates for all programs are:

Session 1: June 16-June 27, 2008

Session 2: June 30-July 11, 2008 (No camp on Independence Day holiday (Friday, July 4, 2008))

Session 3: July 14-July 25, 2008

All programs are offered from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Extended day is offered from 7-9 a.m. and from 4-6 p.m. for an additional charge.

Targeted at children ages 4-17, JaxParks Summer Camps feature a variety of fun opportunities including art, nature, sports and lifeguard camps. A full description of camps, schedules and fees is outlined below.

Fees

Summer Enrichment Camp: $50 per two-week session, $10 for Extended Day each session

Teen Power Camp: $10 per two-week session

Art Camp: $50 per two-week session (No extended care available)

EnviroCamp: $50 per two-week session, $10 for Extended Day each session

Kids Kamp: $50 per two-week session, $10 for Extended Day each session

Tennis Camp: $20 per two-week session

Summer Enrichment Camps This program is for ages 6-12. Camp participants will enjoy a variety of activities including sports, arts and crafts, swimming, board games and field trips. Locations:

Summer Teen Power

Teenagers ages 13-15 can take part in JaxParks Teen Power Junior Counselor program. The program teaches job skills and responsibility and provides an opportunity for youth to gain valuable experience networking with peers in a work environment. Teen Power volunteers are selected through an interview by camp staff. Apply for an interview online beginning Monday, April 7 and the request will be forwarded to the camp director. Parents of selected teens may then pay the applicable fees beginning Tuesday, May 27 from noon-5 p.m.

Art Camp

This program introduces participants to multi-art mediums such as clay works, painting, drawing and printing paper material. Each session is designed for different age groups as follows:

Session 1: Ages 8-9 Session 2: Ages 10-12 Session 3: Ages 13-17

EnviroCamp

This camp gives youth the opportunity to explore their natural surroundings while developing an appreciation and understanding of the natural world around them.

Session 1: Critter Camp Ages 7-9 will experience hands-on activities while learning about critters such as reptiles, birds, mammals, butterflies and other insects. Activities include insect scavenger hunt, animal track identification and care of nature center animals.

Session 2: Exploring H2O Camp Ages 8-10 will learn the importance of water conservation and the impacts of water pollution while becoming familiar with the effects water has on our environment. Activities include water Olympics and other water games. Session 3: Junior Ranger Camp Ages 10-12 will experience what it's like to be a ranger while learning about land management in parks, the usefulness of prescribed fire, and native and exotic species. Activities include orienteering and map reading, trail maintenance and managed animal care.

Kids Kamp

Designed specifically for children ages 4 and 5, Kids Kamp offers our younger population specialized activities geared to children with high energy, active bodies and an inquisitive nature.
Note: Campers who attended this camp in 2007 and have turned 6-years-old, may pre-register at the camp of their choice. Program hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. with extended day available 7-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m.

Tennis Camp A specialized camp for all skill levels, this program teaches youth endurance and agility. Beginners - Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:30-10:30 a.m. Advance Beginners - Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Intermediate--Mondays and Wednesdays, 8:30-10:30 a.m. Advanced - Mondays and Wednesdays, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

JaxParks Basketball Camp at Cuba Hunter Gym

Youth Basketball Camp:

Two sessions: July 28-Aug. 1, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., and Aug. 4- Aug. 8, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., $35 per session

Extended Day: 7-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. $10 per session

Junior Lifeguard Camp

- Three sessions: Ages 11-14, June 16-June 27, June 30-July 11, July 14-25

- 9 a.m.-4 p.m. $150 per session
