Tree of the month of August, 2020
The tree of the month for August is Florida's state tree, the Sabal Palm. Also known as a cabbage palm, this native palm can be found growing anywhere in Jacksonville and around the Southeast United States' coastal regions. Even though the sabal palm is the state tree of Florida, it is actually not true tree; it is a palm which is more closely related to grasses.
It has very showy white flowers that attract pollinators an its small fruit is eaten by birds and dispersed throughout our landscape by bird droppings. Early inhabitants of Florida used sabal palms for many uses, including eating the edible 'hearts' of the palm as well as for uses in building shelter.
Next time you are on a walk around town take a look to see if you can see our state tree in our urban landscape.
