Treadmill Tuesday: Challenge for a healthier community

April 02, 2018
Mayor Curry participating in the 2018 Treadmill Tuesday Challenge at the Winston Family YMCA.

I recently joined the First Coast YMCA to help break the tie with our rivals in Tampa in the Treadmill Tuesday Challenge.

Our cities were tied 1-1 in this friendly annual competition to inspire increased physical activity and healthier lifestyles. The community that logs the most treadmill miles in 12 hours wins. Jacksonville won in 2016, but Tampa took home the win last year.

This event aligns with my commitment to efforts that build a healthier city. Research supports that regular exercise can reduce risks for many chronic conditions.

Jacksonville moved from 55th to 42nd for quality health outcomes in the most recent rankings of Florida’s 67 counties from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. This score represents Jacksonville’s highest ranking in the history of the report, and the largest improvement in the state.

This success would not be possible without the combined efforts of the Jacksonville community.

There are so many great partners in our Journey To One health initiative, and the Treadmill Tuesday Challenges was a great way for citizens to earn their monthly Mayorthon miles.

We’ve made great progress, but I want Jacksonville to be number one! I encourage everyone in Jacksonville to join the Journey To One and commit to leading healthier and more active lifestyles.
