Last week, I had the opportunity to meet and spend time with the “Steiners” – a group of promising students from the University of North Florida.
It was inspiring to converse with bright young leaders studying a variety of fields, including mechanical engineering, microbiology, criminal justice, communications, business management and more.
The students attend UNF as recipients of the David A. Stein Business Ethics Scholarship, founded by entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist David Stein and his wife Linda.
David is a successful businessman who helped launch Burger King into a national chain early in his career. He established the King Provision Corp. to supply Burger King restaurants, and co-founded the T.L. Cannon Companies which owned many Applebee’s restaurants throughout New York and Connecticut.
Through all of this success, David and Linda have made Jacksonville their home and give back to the community in a variety of ways. As David puts it, “I worked hard here, I did well here and I give back here.”
The Steins give back through dozens of philanthropic endeavors, the “Steiners” among them. Their aim is to build strong connections with promising young leaders, empowering them with a college education, and encouraging them to build their careers in the Jacksonville community. They launched scholarships at both UNF and Jacksonville University.
Jacksonville is fortunate to have many dedicated and generous leaders like the Steins in our community, willing to invest in our future.
