Riverfront Plaza to host the inaugural championship showcasing the top talent in the world

As the home of the nation’s oldest skate park, Jacksonville has been selected as host of the inaugural Street League Skateboarding World Championship the weekend of November 13, transforming Riverfront Plaza into the ultimate skateboard playground for a weekend.

“As a community that has been involved in skateboarding from its earliest days, we are excited to host the inaugural Street League Skateboarding world championship,” said Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry.  “We look forward to welcoming fans from around the world to our Downtown and showcasing all of the great things that Jacksonville has to offer on the world stage.”

SLS brings 25 of the world’s best skateboarders together in a competitive battle for the largest amount of prize money in professional skateboarding. The SLS is the foremost competitive series in the sport and features some of the sport’s best skaters like Nyjah Huston and Chris Joslin. The SLS promotes competitive street skating and allows for an extremely accessible way into the sport for all forms of fans.

“We are pleased to bring the 2021 SLS World Championship to Jacksonville,” said Thrill One Chief Commercial and Communications Officer Steve Ziff.  “The growth of SLS continues each year and with skateboard in the Olympics, we look forward to having those athletes join the competition later in 2021 in a world class facility built specifically for this event on the banks of the St. Johns River.”
Founded in 2010 by skater, entrepreneur and television personality Rob Dyrdek, SLS aims to bring skateboarding and its acceptance to a global level. Since its inception, Dyrdek and his team have brought SLS all over the globe.

“Thanks to all of the support from Mayor Curry, the City of Jacksonville, Visit Jacksonville and the Tourist Development Council, we are proud to bring this world championship to Downtown,” said Alan Verlander, Founder and CEO of Airstream Ventures.  “We are fortunate to have such a beautiful space in our Downtown that we look forward to transforming into a premier skateboard competition venue that will provide a first class fan experience.”

The SLS World Tour event will be held at Riverfront Plaza in Jacksonville, located along the scenic St. Johns River downtown. This will be the first time the league has come to the River City.  Each SLS skatepark is unique in its design, all of which are created by Dydrek and Joe Ciaglia of California Skateparks.

“Our team at Visit Jacksonville is proud to host all of the visiting fans from Street League Skateboarding and introduce them to our great city,” said Michael Corrigan, CEO of Visit Jacksonville.  “This event showcases our destination in a new light, and we look forward to providing a first class visitor experience around this world championship event.”
