FREEZE/HARD FREEZE WARNING AND WIND CHILL ADVISORY ISSUED, COJ WARMING CENTER OPENING SATURDAY NIGHT

The National Weather Service is forecasting dangerously cold temperatures, with wind chills, or “feels like” temperatures in the teens and 20’s. A Freeze/Hard Freeze Warning and Wind Chill Advisory are in effect around Northeast Florida tonight.

With temperatures reaching 28 degrees or colder, the Emergency Preparedness Division has activated its Phase 3 Cold Weather Emergency Plan. The City of Jacksonville Warming Center will be open overnight – from 7 p.m. on Saturday, January 20, 2024 to 11 a.m. on Sunday, January 21, 2024 – to residents who do not have access to adequate heat.

JTA buses will transport vulnerable individuals to the Legends Center for free with shuttles operating from the following locations starting at 7 p.m. and ending at 9 p.m. on Saturday, January 20, 2024.
  • Downtown – Jacksonville Regional Transportation Center, 100 LaVilla Center Drive, 32204
  • Northwest – Armsdale Park-n-Ride, 3191 Armsdale Road, 32218
  • West – Orange Park Mall bus stop
  • Arlington – Regency Square Mall bus hub
  • Routes 3, 4 & 22 also service the Legends Center.
Residents utilizing the warming center should bring the following items. Passengers on JTA routes or shuttles are limited to what they can carry.
  • Air mattress, blankets, pillows, or other bedding
  • Snacks and medication
  • Games, toys, and books
  • Hygiene, and comfort items
Our non-profit partners at area shelters are also providing weather shelter services to the homeless population. These shelters include:
  • City Rescue Mission, 234 W. State Street, 32202
  • Mission House, 465 11th Ave. N, Jacksonville Beach, 32250, overnight operations at Palms Presbyterian Church, 3410 3rd St S, Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250 (*NEW/UPDATED LOCATION*)
  • Sulzbacher Center
    • 611 East Adams St., 32202 – Men
    • 5455 Springfield Blvd. 32208 – Women and Children
  • Trinity Rescue Mission, 622 W. Union Street, 32202
