Jacksonville Small and Emerging Business Vendor Spotlight

July 17, 2023

Meet Gene Carter, owner of GEC Trucking & Construction, Inc.! Please read about his business and experience in the Jacksonville Small and Emerging Business Program (JSEB).

Gene CarterBusiness Bio:
“Before retiring from the U.S. Navy in 2005, I had a plan to start a dump truck company. Growing up in Baxley, GA, my family owned a farm and trucking business for several generations. That provided me with years of experience learning about running a company. So, starting my own company was just a natural step after my retirement.”

Since starting in 2003, GEC Trucking & Construction, Inc. has provided dump truck hauling services throughout Northeast Florida. The company has played an integral part in the site preparation and hauling of aggregate materials. Our first major project was upgrading all city streets prior to the 2005 Super Bowl. Since then, GEC has delivered over a million tons of asphalt on every major FDOT highway project in Jacksonville and surrounding counties.

JSEB Vendor experience:
GEC Trucking & Construction, Inc. has been very successful as a JSEB vendor. The company has a great working relationship with many of the local construction companies and aggregate material prime contractors.

“When I first started the company, it was very challenging to get projects. Once I received my JSEB certification, many opportunities opened up to allow me to grow my company.

In addition, the training I’ve received over the years has helped me better manage my company. As a result, I have a team of dump truck drivers and subcontractors, as well as construction staff who manage the company’s local, State and Federal projects.

The JSEB Program has truly been a valuable vehicle to help me grow my company. I would encourage any serious business owner to apply for the JSEB certification to take their business to the next level.”

Goal or achievement reached in business:
In 2017, the company expanded into the construction industry with the goal of being the Prime Contractor on Federal Government and DoD projects. With the help of a local business consultant, Mr. Carter obtained his SBA 8(a), HUBZone and Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) certifications in 2020. With these certifications, our company has been successful in the award of several contracts with the Department of the Navy, Air Force, Veterans Administration, as well as the Federal Aviation Administration.

The JSEB vendor spotlight is a newly implemented initiative with the sole purpose of recognizing outstanding JSEB vendors each month. The EBO Office knows that all active JSEB vendors work very hard to accomplish all of their business goals. We want to recognize all of your efforts and spotlight your best moments. Our hope is that EVERY JSEB vendor is spotlighted! Contact Sheliah Brown at snbrown@coj.net if you are interested in being spotlighted or if you would like to nominate someone!
