Celebrate Black History Month with James Weldon Johnson Park

February 1, 2021 - Friends of James Weldon Johnson Park is proud to host events in James Weldon Johnson Park located at 135 W. Monroe Street in the heart of Downtown Jacksonville. All activities listed below are free and open to the public. 

SPECIAL EVENTS 

Love Through Words with The Suedes & Hope at Hand Inc. 
Friday, February 12, 2021 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. 

Bring your sweetheart to James Weldon Johnson Park on February 12 for a Valentine’s Day pre-game lunch! There will be food trucks, live music performed by The Suedes, a “Couple’s Clicks” Selfie Station & a poem exhibit from Hope at Hand Inc.

Duval Legacies: Celebrating the Life of James Weldon Johnson 
Saturday, February 20, 2021 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

Hosted by Henny Stewart & DJ T-Roy, Duval Legacies is a new outdoor festival that celebrates and blends Jacksonville’s Black history and culture. Join local leaders, rising stars and some of Duval's finest talent as we celebrate the Park’s new namesake, James Weldon Johnson! Live entertainment by Players by the Sea, Nan Nkama Dance & MJ Baker.

Art in the Park 
Saturday, March 13, 2021 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Watch local artists create chalk masterpieces right before your very eyes – or – create a masterpiece of your own! Sign up as an artist to celebrate the theme of Jacksonville’s “Bright Future”. Artists of all ages are encouraged to participate. Citizens will also vote on their favorites, with prizes given to the best in their categories. Food trucks and a killer DJ will help set the festive mood! 

There are two competitions in the chalk drawing contest, one for students and one for professionals. please go to the correct link below and submit the information requested including a quick sketch of your planned artwork.

Submissions are due by Wednesday, February 10. Notification of acceptance will be given by Wednesday, February 17.

Friends of James Weldon Johnson Park hosts live music from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Wednesday music is sponsored by Jax Vision Care.
