January 27, 2020
Mayor Lenny Curry is pleased to announce that Steve Riska, who has been serving as Interim Division Chief of Fire Operations with Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department, is now permanently appointed to the position.
“Steve Riska has been an outstanding member of JFRD for more than 23 years and has served in multiple leadership roles,” Mayor Curry said. “He has been essential in guiding the department through day-to-day operations in multiple divisions, and has a long list of certifications and experience. Chief Riska was JFRD’s lead commander for the recent successful search and rescue of two missing kids on Jacksonville’s Westside. Jacksonville will be well served with Chief Riska continuing in this role.”

Chief Riska started his career in 1996 as a firefighter with Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department where he was quickly promoted to Engineer. In 2003, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, then to Captain four years later. Throughout his career with JFRD, Riska has demonstrated proven leadership in multiple areas. From 2009 to 2016, Riska was the senior most Captain on the Hazardous Materials Team where he coordinated all maintenance, training and procurement. From 2016 to 2019, Riska served as Deputy Division Chief where he implemented policies, procedures and protocols to enhance the Fire Suppression Division. During this time, he also directed the Ocean Rescue Division and all its personnel. Riska holds 17 Materials Certificates including Live Fire Burn Training Instructor, Paramedic and Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings. He was appointed Interim Division Chief in July of 2019.

Mayor Curry and his administration will advance this appointment to the City Council for their approval.
