Local seniors at the 2018 Walk for Senior Wellness

National Senior Center Month is Here

September 04, 2018
September is National Senior Center Month, an observance dedicated to promoting a positive image of aging and showcasing local senior centers throughout the country.

The national celebration of senior centers began in 1979 as National Senior Center Week celebrated in May. The celebration gained steam in 1985 when the National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC) was instrumental in achieving the first Senior Center Week presidential proclamation signed by President Ronald Reagan. In 2007, NISC designated the entire month of September as Senior Center Month.

The City of Jacksonville Senior Services Division, which offers communitywide social service programs to adults ages 55+ in Jacksonville and Duval County, operates 20 senior centers throughout the community. The mission of the Senior Services division is to encourage and empower senior citizens to live active, independent lifestyles through social, educational and wellness programs.
