OCEARCH returned to Jacksonville for its 24th expedition to generate scientific data critical to ocean conservation by satellite tagging Great White Sharks. Mayor Lenny Curry joined the OCEARCH team to launch Expedition Jacksonville Tuesday, March 15.
In 2013, the OCEARCH crew tagged a 14-foot, 2,000 pound Great White Shark named Lydia near the mouth of the St. Johns River. Since then, the shark has traveled over 35,000 miles, demonstrating the connectivity of Florida waters with the northeastern Atlantic.
For this expedition, OCEARCH has assembled a multi-institutional, collaborative science team to gather data to further the understanding of the ecology, natural history, physiology and behavior of Great White Sharks in the Atlantic Ocean.
The expedition will end April 2, 2016.
