Mayor Curry's Daylong Journey

Mayor visits Jacksonville Journey Programs to Learn More about Service Needs

Identifying barriers to safety as his top priority and the greatest threat to citizens, Mayor Lenny Curry is leading a daylong "journey" with agencies that address those barriers and serve and support youth. As he relaunches Jacksonville Journey, an initiative developed in 2007 to address crime through intervention, prevention and enforcement efforts, the mayor will devote his afternoon touring with agencies whose services are currently included or being evaluated for Jacksonville Journey programming.

Duval County Public Schools Superintendent Nikolai P. Vitti will showcase the ATOSS program to highlight the successful efforts it has made in providing an alternative to out-of-school suspensions by providing a place where students are given the opportunity and resources to continue the learning process in a safe, structured and supervised environment.

Early Learning Coalition of Duval President & CEO Susan Main and center director Katrina Wise will share the successes Early Learning funding has achieved through the professional development and coaching provided to the early learning centers’ teachers and staff.

Jacksonville Public Library Director Barbara Gubbin will share how the L.E.A.P. program and its outreach efforts will work to increase literacy in the urban core for children and adults.

The Jacksonville Journey initiative brought together a talented and diverse group of community leaders, law enforcement, educators and community stakeholders to recommend action steps to end violence and move Jacksonville in a direction toward prosperity and peace.
 
Jacksonville Journey programs have included:

  • Juvenile Crime Prevention/Intervention
  • Alternative to Out of School Suspension
  • Summer Jobs
  • After school and summer camp
  • Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC)
  • Early Literacy
