Friendship Fountain lit up at night

Friendship Fountain

February 15, 2024
Friendship Fountain, located within St. Johns River Park on the Southbank, boasts a rich history dating back to its development in 1965. Originally championed by Commissioner Dallas L. Thomas, and designed by architect Taylor Hardwick, the fountain's unique concentric design and grandeur have made it an iconic landmark.

Over the years, several refurbishments and renovations have been undertaken to maintain its allure.

The recent renew and refresh project aimed to revitalize Friendship Fountain, addressing issues such as malfunctioning lights, leaks and deteriorating infrastructure. Led by Fluidity Design, the project introduced innovative features like a waterfall wall and revamped fountain components. Additionally, improvements were made to the surrounding area, including the addition of circular benches with integrated speakers, pergolas for shaded seating and new walkways with LED lights that can change colors. Phase I of this project cost $7.95 million.

Looking ahead, plans for St. John’s River Park envision a themed playground area, concession stand, restrooms, a wedding venue, picnic areas and interpretive gardens. These second and third phases of the park are scheduled to open late summer 2024 and fall 2025, respectively. The enhancements aim to transform the park into a vibrant destination for families of all ages, highlighting the area's rich history and natural beauty.
