Mayor Brown Announces MLS Exhibition at EverBank Field

Philadelphia Union agrees to play exhibition matches in Jacksonville
 
Major League Soccer will be coming to EverBank Field for at least the next three years as Mayor Alvin Brown announced an agreement with Philadelphia Union to host an annual exhibition match each February.
 
On Feb. 15, 2013, the Union will face another MLS team, to be announced in the near future, starting at 7:30 p.m.  There will be a free youth clinic at 5:30 p.m.  Tickets are on sale at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena box office and online at Ticketmaster.com.

Team Wins Pop Warner Midget Division National Championship

On Saturday, December 8th the Sweetwater Athletic Association Pop Warner football team (Midget Division – ages 12-15) defeated the Northwest Raiders Midget Team from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by a score of 30-0 to win the Pop Warner Division 1 Midget National Championship at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex at Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
 

Mayor Brown Presents Awards to Essay Contest Winners

Mayor Alvin Brown presented awards to the nine winners of the inaugural Mayor Brown Essay Contest on Friday, Dec. 7, at City Hall. The essay contest theme, “With A College Degree I can…”, prompted 827 entries from elementary, middle and high school students throughout Duval County. First place winners received iPads; second place winners received Nexus Tablets and third place winners received a $200 Visa gift card. Prizes were purchased through the Mayor’s Education Trust Fund.

City Council Standing Committee Meetings Rescheduled

In accordance with Ordinance 2012-423-E, the City Council regular standing committee meetings scheduled for Monday, December 31, 2012, and Tuesday, January 1, 2013, will be held 48 hours later than normal.  The Monday committee meetings will be held on Wednesday, January 2, 2013, and the Tuesday committee meetings will be held on Thursday, January 3, 2013.

City Rescue Mission to host pilot project

City Rescue Mission is partnering with the City of Jacksonville to administer a one-year pilot project that will host a daytime resource center intended to transform the lives of Jacksonville’s homeless.

Mayor Alvin Brown applauded the City Rescue Mission and its CEO, David Bugher, during Thursday’s announcement, saying it marked a significant step toward developing solutions for those who are trying to rebuild themselves amid personal and economic challenges.

Mayor Appoints Economic Development Officer

Position is critical component of mayor’s vision for jobs and opportunity

Mayor Alvin Brown has chosen Theodore N. Carter, an executive with more than 20 years of public and private sector experience, to head the new Office of Economic Development.

As the Economic Development Officer, he will manage the city’s day-to-day economic development functions with an aim to attract good-paying jobs and quality business opportunities to make Jacksonville more competitive. His appointment is a critical component of the mayor’s vision to transition away from the Jacksonville Economic Development Commission and create an Office of Economic Development with executive management capacity.

March Madness Will Return To Jacksonville

The City of Jacksonville will welcome the NCAA men's basketball championship to the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena in 2015 with the second and third rounds being awarded on Monday.

This is the third time that Jacksonville has been picked to be a host. Past events generated an estimated economic of $12 million in 2006, and a similar impact was projected in 2010.

"March Madness will draw investment and attention on our great city,” said Mayor Brown. “Hosting the NCAA tournament continues the momentum we have experienced in making our city a great destination for sports and entertainment. I want to thank all of our partners for working with us to successfully bid for the tournament.”

Mayor Brown and City of Jacksonville Host the 2012 Week of Valor

Mayor Brown and the City of Jacksonville honor the service and sacrifice of Jacksonville's military community with the Week of Valor. The weeklong series of events aims to connect active duty military, veterans and their families with job opportunities and services, as well as honor their service to our great nation. Events include the Veterans Summit, Veterans Job Fair and the Veterans Day Parade. In addition, there will be two nationally televised sporting events with the Jacksonville Jaguars Military Appreciation Game and the Navy-Marine Corps Classic on the deck of the USS Bataan.
