Historic Preservation Project Awards

In celebration of National Preservation Month, the Jacksonville Historic Preservation Commission will honor 23 projects and services at its annual awards ceremony.
The Commission’s annual awards ceremony recognizes outstanding projects and services that promote historic preservation in the Jacksonville area. Award categories include: Heritage Education; Residential and Commercial Rehabilitation; Architecturally Compatible New Construction; Preservation Projects and Services; and Archaeology/Historic Landscapes. The awards will be presented by the Historic Preservation Commissioners with Chairman Jennifer A. Mansfield acting as the master of ceremonies.

The 2014 Preservation Awards will honor the following:

Heritage Education-Books

  • The Perfect Ending by W. Earl Kitchings
  • Jacksonville’s Southside (Images of America) by Debra Webb Rogers
  • Almost Hollywood: The Forgotten Story of Jacksonville Florida by Blair Miller
  • Zora Neal Hurston: In and Around Jacksonville in the 1920’s, 1930’s and 1940’s by
    M. Alene Murrell

Heritage Education-Exhibits, Productions and Collections

  • Jack H. King Collection at the Jacksonville Historical Society
  • More Than A Game: African American Sports in Jacksonville, 1900-1975 Exhibit 
  • Conversations on Catfish, Courtrooms, and Change Documentary

Heritage Education-Events

  • Gingerbread House Extravaganza
  • Matthews Bridge 60th Celebration
  • 2013 National ASALH Conference held in Jacksonville

Preservation Service-Individual

  • Keith Holland for his dedication to the archaeological recovery and preservation of artifacts of the Maple Leaf site

Preservation Project or Service- Organizations

  • Restoration of Old St Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery 
  • Restoration of San Jose Estates Gates
  • Southern Genealogists Exchange Society (SGES) for 50 years of service devoted to preserving southern history

National Preservation Month was created by the National Trust for Historic Preservation to spotlight grassroots preservation efforts around the country. Communities take this time to celebrate historic preservation activities in order to create greater public awareness, understanding and appreciation of efforts to preserve local historic resources and heritage.
