He’s not even old enough to vote, but one local 10-year-old is getting a head start on his government experience as he takes on the role of “kid mayor,” alongside Mayor Lenny Curry. Selected from nearly 60 nominations, Central Riverside Elementary School fourth-grader and National Jr. Beta Club student Micah Hall will spend the afternoon with Mayor Curry in observance of Florida City Government Week (Oct 22-28).

They will present proclamations, recognizing local citizens and organizations for service to the Jacksonville community.

When not serving as a kid mayor, Micah has a passion for math, politics and sports, especially basketball. He also regularly advocates on behalf of his peers both at school and in the community. Last September, Micah approached the Duval County School Board when he learned that art, music and physical education programs were being reduced in local schools. Micah took to the podium and read a statement to the board members outlining reasons why students need resources.

“Micah is a strong leader who cares about his classmates,” said one of his nominators. “The other children look up to him and he is always the first person to celebrate others’ success.”
