Mayor Curry Responds to Increased Cases of COVID-19

“With many businesses now requiring a negative COVID-19 test result to allow employees to come to work, and with some clearly not taking this virus seriously, we are experiencing surge in numbers at testing facilities.” Mayor Lenny Curry said. “Just yesterday, 783 people were tested at Lot J, setting a record since it first opened. The Legends Center tested 270. Across the City, multiple private locations tested hundreds more for COVID-19. As a result, our positive test results are increasing, and we are aware that most of those individuals are asymptomatic or experiencing mild symptoms.”
Mayor Curry said, “I have always said this virus spreads person to person. I have always said that we should be social distancing and wearing masks. As we are seeing right now, without these precautions, the community spread is real. For example, there are people in crowded bars and walking on crowded streets who are not wearing masks and ignoring social distancing.”
“Thankfully, despite our increase in cases, our hospitals are not seeing spikes of COVID-19 patients. Our hospital ICU’s beds are not near capacity because of COVID patients and JFRD reports emergency transports continue to stay at one or two COVID patients per day.”
“A large portion of the increased cases we are seeing are from what’s called “household spread.” That means one individual is taking this virus home and spreading it through the entire household. With that in mind and with this increase in positive cases, it is imperative that people take personal responsibility and precautions as I have said from the very beginning. All citizens should continue to practice social distancing, wear masks in crowded, public spaces and wash your hands frequently. If you test positive, you need to self-isolate for 14 days.”
