Veterans Preference

Eligible veterans, disabled veterans and spouses of disabled veterans must furnish the following documentation in order to receive veteran’s preference:
  • DD-214 (Member Form-4 copy) or military discharge papers, or equivalent certification from the Department of Veterans Affairs listing military status, dates of service and character of discharge.
  • Disability letter, if applicable
If you are eligible for preference as an unremarried widow or widower of a deceased veteran, the following documents are required:
  • Document from the Department of Defense or the DVA certifying the service-connected death
  • Provide evidence of marriage such as a marriage certificate
  • In lieu of the marriage certificate, evidence may be provided by completing the Certification of Unremarried Widow or Widower Form (FDVA form VP-3)
If you are eligible for preference as a current member of the reserve component of the United States Armed Forces or the Florida National Guard, the following documents are required: 
  • DD-214 (Member Form-4 copy) or military discharge papers, or equivalent certification from the Department of Veterans Affairs listing military status, dates of service and character of discharge.
  • Signed memorandum stating he or she is serving honorably from his or her Commander or military human resource personnel, or;
  • A completed Certification of Current Member of Reserve Component of the United States Armed Forces or the Florida National Guard Form (FDVA form VP-2)
If you are eligible as a mother, father, or legal guardian of a deceased veteran, the following documents are required:
  • A document from the Department of Defense showing the death of the service member while on duty status under combat-related conditions or the DVA certifying the service-connected death of the veteran.
  • Evidence of a familial relationship such as a birth certificate.
If you are a current service member of any active component of the United States Armed Forces who is expected to be discharged or released from active duty service under honorable conditions, the following documents are required:
  • No later than 120 days after the date that a Statement of Service certification or letter is prepared by the armed forces.  These documents may be provided in lieu of a DD-214 which may not be available until active service has ended.
If a candidate believes he or she was not afforded veteran’s preference, he or she may file a written complaint, within 60 calendar days upon receipt of notification of the hiring decision, requesting an investigation to:
